커뮤니티 스페이스 리트머스 2013년 국제 레지던시 결과 보고 전시 ' Cats on a roof _ 지붕 위의 고양이' 가 있습니다. 다양한 분야에서 활동하는 3명의 작가들이 안산 원곡동을 중심으로 창작 활동 한 작업들을 소개하는 중요한 자리가 될 것입니다.

축적과 확장의 예술적 실험

지난 7월, 커뮤니티 스페이스 리트머스는 아트포러스에 합류하면서 기존의 지하 갤러리를 떠나서 새로운 공간으로 이전했다. 새로운 공간에서는 2층의 갤러리와 함께 옥상 공간의 활용이라는 ‘막중한’의무가 주어졌고, 리트머스 소속의 다양한 작가 및 연구자 그룹들이 현재에서 이 공간의 변태(變態)를 고민 중이다.

올해 리트머스의 국제 레지던시 프로그램은 “지붕 위의 고양이는 어디로 갔는가”라는 주제 아래, 다른 그룹들과 함께 옥상 공간의 활용 방안을 프로그램의 참여자들에게 질문으로 던졌고, 이번 전시는 참여 작가들의 노력의 결과물들이 그들의 대답으로 다중 앞에 선보이는 첫 번째 기회이다. 커뮤니티 스페이스 리트머스는 이들 참여자들에게 외형만을 갖춘, 무의미한 죽은 공동체의 공간이 아니라 실제 공동체가 활용할 수 있는 살아있는 공간을 만들라는 난제를 그들의 어깨와 머리에 지워주었고, 참여 작가들은 주어진 시간과 자원을 이용하여 최대한의 해답을 끌어내었다.

현대 산업 사회의 이면을 강렬한 어조로 시각화하는 프랑스계 한국인 토마 데샹은 예술가의 예술 활동의 사회적 의미를 다시금 생각해보는 작품들을 제시했고, 다양한 커뮤니티 아트의 경험을 보유한 필리핀 출신의 마이클 빈센트 마날로는 버려지는 물건들을 악기로 재탄생시키면서 그저 바라보는 작품이 아니라, 경험하고 즐길 수 있는 작품과 함께, 다문화 지역에서는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 이주민과 원주민 간의 미묘한 긴장감을 시각적으로 묘사하는 작품을 선보인다. 전통 음악에의 새로운 접근법을 연구하는 바레인 출신의 작곡가이자 사운드 아티스트이자, 연구자인 하산 후자이리는 UFO와 외계인이라는 가상적 현실 상황을 가정하면서 공간과 소리가 인간의 인지와 감각을 작동시키는 방식에 대한 자신의 연구를 작품을 통해 계속한다. 이들은 옥상의 빈 공간을 작은 모임이나 조용한 휴식처로 탈바꿈 시키고, 사운드와 이미지를 조합하는 예술적 실험을 수행하며, 특히 오프닝에서는 자신들의 경험과 전문 분야를 십분 활용한 연주와 퍼포먼스를 선보인다.

이번 레지던시를 통해, 그리고 그 결과보고전을 통해 커뮤니티 스페이스 리트머스는 또 다른 예술적 시도를 수행한다. 적극적으로 사운드를 활용하는 작가들을 초청하여 이들과 함께 몸이 직관적으로 감각하는 예술을 커뮤니티 아트에 도입한다. 늘 그래왔듯 커뮤니티 스페이스 리트머스의 레지던시 프로그램은 예술적 영역의 축적과 확장을 동시에 이루어왔고, 이번 국제 레지던시 또한 커뮤니티 스페이스 리트머스의 국제 레지던시의 역사 속에서 새로운 축적과 확장의 한 장을 채울 것이다.







Artistic Experiment of Accumulation and Expansion

In July, Community Space LITMUS join the foundation of Art for Us and move its gallery to a new space. In this new space, LITMUS was given tasks of operating the gallery on the 2nd floor, as well as utilisation of its rooftop, and to complete the mission in hand, different groups consisting of diverse artists and researchers of LITMUS are currently working on metamorphosis of this space.

In line with these efforts, LITMUS raised the question on how to utilise the rooftop as a community space to the participants of 2013 Artist-in-Residence Program, and as their response to the question, the participants are presenting the results of their 2-month residency to the public. Community Space LITMUS casted a difficult puzzle, and requested them to come up with ways to create the space not as meaningless dead space, but as space with livelihood, and the participants are able to maximise their given time and resources in solving this puzzle.

Thomas Deschamps, a Korean French artist presents his works leading us to reconsider the social implication of artistic activities of an artist. Michael Vincent Manalo from the Philippines, based on his various experiences of community art, recreate thrown-away objects into alternative musical instrument, which are not for just watching, but for experiencing and enjoying. He also presents visual description of a delicate tension between migrant workers and natives, which can easily be found in any multi-cultural areas. Hasan Hujairi, a Bahraini composer, sound artist and researcher, seeking a new approach to traditional music, presupposes an fictional reality of UFO and aliens, and continues his research on how a combination of sound and image operates human cognition and senses. They transform a small space on the rooftop into space for small gatherings or resting, execute their artistic experiment of combination of sound and image, and especially, during the opening they maximise their experiences and expertise to present a musical performance.

Through this residency programme, and via the exhibition, Community Space LITMUS endeavors another artistic trial. By inviting artists actively employing sound into their artworks, LITMUS introduces arts with which audience can sense with their bodies intuitively. So far, Community Space LITMUS has accumulated and expanded the field of the arts. This residency programme shall also fill in a page of the history of accumulation and expansion of Community Space LITMUS.
