14. Korean Painting (한국 현대회화의 흐름)
From Modern to Contemporary, 1945-1980


1945년 광복 이후 구상과 비구상의 양대 계보, 1970년대 실험 미술, 1980년대 민중 미술 등 시기별로 한국 화단에 대두되었던 주요 이슈들과 해외 동향의 유입 및 한국 미술가들의 해외 진출 등을 정리하여 소개하고 있다.

우리가 주목해야 하는 부분은 당시 우리나라 예술가들과 지식인들이 조선 색과 문화 정체성에 대해서 어떠한 인식을 가지고 있었으며, 이러한 경험이 광복 이후에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가 하는 점이다. 위에서 살펴본 바와 같이 일제 강점기 동안 외래 문물이 밀려들어오고 문화적 정통성이 위협을 받게 되자 예술가들 사이에서는 이에 대한 위기의식과 함께 능동적인 대응 필요성이 광범위하게 대두되었다.

현재로서는 서양 미술사의 전개 양상에 따라서 만들어진 이 용어들을 사용할 수밖에 없지만 적어도 시대 구분과 역사 인식의 문제가 우리 스스로의 가치를 평가하는데 있어서 얼마나 중요한지는 다시 한 번 되새겨 볼 필요가 있다.

We need to focus on what sort of cognizance Korean artists and intellectuals had at the time on Joseon color and cultural identity, and what kind of influences these experiences had after the liberation. When cultural legitimacy was threatened by the waves of foreign culture under the Japanese colonial rule, the need for cultural crisis awareness and proactive action vastly emerged.

We have no choice but to use the terms and legacies created during the development phase of the Western art history for now, but we need to mediate once again on how important the notion and self-awareness of our own history are in evaluating our own values.
