주로 청소년을 대상으로 한 아이돌 그룹의 팝과 댄스음악을 지칭하는 K-pop의 인기가 아시아를 넘어 유럽과 남미에 이르기까지 높아지고 있다. 한국에서 이런 종류의 음악이 본격적으로 등장한 것은 90년대 들어서부터인데, 이러한 음악이 갑자기 생겨난 것은 아니며 그 뿌리는 수십 년에 걸친 한국 대중음악의 역사에 닿아 있다. 이 책은 한국 음악에 관심 있는 외국인을 위해 한국에서 대중음악이 시작되고 발전해 온 과정을 소개하고자 쓰였다. 한국 사회가 변화해 온 과정에서 함께 변화하고 발전해 온 한국 대중음악의 역사를 이해하는 것은 곧 한국 사회의 변화 과정을 이해하는 것이기도 하다.

이 책은 크게 두 부분으로 나뉘어 있다. 첫 번째 부분에서는 일제강점기에서 90년대 초까지 한국 대중음악의 변화 양상을 살핀다. K-pop의 전사(前史)에 해당하는 이 부분을 통해 K-pop이 처한 역사적 맥락을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 두 번째 부분은 90년대를 거치며 K-pop이 형성되어 전세계적인 문화로 발전한 현재까지의 상황을 서술한다. K-pop의 대표적인 아이돌 그룹들, K-pop을 낳은 사회적 상황, 그리고 K-pop의 생산 시스템 등과 같은 주제들이 이 부분에서 다루어진다.

K-pop의 세계적인 열풍 현상을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 K-pop을 둘러싼 역사적 맥락과 구조적 상황을 아우르는 좀 더 입체적인 시각이 필요하다. 그러한 의미에서 이 책은 K-pop과 한국 대중문화, 나아가 한국 사회를 알고 싶어 하는 이들에게 좋은 안내서가 될 것이다.

K-POP이란 단순히 한국의 대중음악을 뜻하기보다 한국의 음악산업을 통해 생산되고 해외 지역에서 소비되는 대중음악 및 그와 연관된 문화현상을 포괄적으로 지칭한다.

K-POP-How it became the global craze

K-pop, referred to pop and dance music performed by idol groups mainly targeted at teens, has been expanding in popularity beyond Asia to Europe and South America. It was the 1990s when this school of music first appeared in Korea, but its emergence was not abrupt and its roots are sunk deep into decades of Korean popular music history. This book is designed to introduce to international audiences interested in Korean music how the modern form of Korean pop music began and evolved. Understanding the history of Korean pop music, which has shifted and progressed in the currents of social transformation, means figuring out just how Korean society has been transfigured.

This book is mainly divided into two sections. The first deals with the developments in Korean pop music from Japanese rule up to the early 1990s. Exploring this period, which falls into a prehistory of K-pop, will serve as an opportunity for understanding the historical context surrounding K-pop. The second section illustrates the processes of the formation to K-pop throughout the 1990s and the stages in its development into its current form as a globalized cultural element. The main focuses of the second portion include K-pop’s representative idol groups, the social circumstances that yielded K-pop, and its production system.

Gaining a thorough grasp of the K-pop fever around the world requires a more multi-dimensional perspective that encompasses its historical context and structural conditions. In this sense, this book will prove useful to those who desire to learn about K-pop and Korean popular culture, and further about Korean society.
