15. Postmodern Art in Korea (한국의 포스트모던 미술)

1985년 이후 부상한 포스트모던 논의를 시작으로 최근까지 한국현대미술을 비평적 관점으로 서술하고 있다. 특히 포스트모던의 주제와 형식에 초점을 맞추어 회화, 조각, 설치, 사진, 영상 중심의 한국 현대미술사 그리고 작가와 작품을 소개한다.

1990년대 포스트모던의 징후들은 기존체제와 갈등을 빚으며 여러 부작용을 양산하면서도 변화의 주체로써 예술분야에서 많은 긍정적인 역할을 수행한 것 또한 사실이다. 본 저서에서 소개한 작가들이 이에 해당하며, 이 외에도 여러 작가들이 있겠으나 지면상 모두 언급할 수 없음을 독자들이 이해해 주길 바란다. 소개된 작가들을 포스트모던 작가라 명확하게 분류하기는 어렵다. 왜냐하면 포스트모던의 관점에서는 ‘분류하는 그 자체가 모순’이므로, 이들은 어디에 속하기에 앞서 기본적으로 예술의 무정부주의자들이라 하는 편이 낫다. 그러나 때에 따라서는 이들의 작품과 생각에서 영향과 수용을 넘어선 변질된 형태의 포스트모더니티를 읽어낼 수 있으며, 그것은 이 시대의 또 다른 ‘원본성’으로서의 한국현대미술이다.

포스트모더니즘은 일반적으로 모더니즘의 뒤를 따르는 시대를 일컬으며 문화, 문학, 예술, 철학, 경제, 건축, 소설, 문학 비평에 대한 회의적인 해석을 위한 모호하지만 중요성을 가진 용어로써 이들의 정치, 사회적 역할을 재평가, 재정립하고자 한다.

The signs of the postmodern 1990s conflicted with the existing system, but they played a positive role in various genres of art as the principal agent for change. Pertinent to the artists introduced in this book, it also applied to countless others who could not all be mentioned here. It is hard to clearly classify the figures in this book as postmodern artists. From the postmodern perspective “categorization itself is a contradiction” so rather than defining them by affiliation, it is more fitting to call them anarchists.

Postmodernism generally refers to the epoch that follows; although it is obscure in its skeptical interpretation of culture, literature, art, philosophy, economics, architecture, fiction, and literary criticism, the terminology holds importance in reevaluating and redefining their role in politics and society.
