춤꾼들의 독창적 세계 한국 현대 무용의 어제와 오늘

한국인은 예로부터 춤을 즐기고 사랑하는 가무(歌舞)민족으로 알려져 왔다. 오랫동안 농경사회를 이루어 온 한국인에게 기본적인 삶의 양식이었던 농경, 종교, 예술, 여가 활동에서 춤은 행동 양식을 유기적으로 통합시키는 구실을 하였다. 그러나 20세기 초 서구 문물을 받아들이면서 춤의 형식이 서양식 극장 춤 스타일로 변모하고, 20세기 중반 이후 한국에서는 세계에 유례가 없을 정도로 급속도로 서구화가 이루어지면서 현대 한국 무용계에도 사상적 충돌과 혼란이 반영되어 다양한 양상을 만들어내고 있다.

는 이러한 상황 속에서 꽃핀 한국의 현대 무용의 흐름과 현황, 그리고 주요 컨템포러리 무용가 및 무용단을 소개함으로써 현대 무용 전반에 대한 기초적인 이해를 돕고자 한다. 더불어 현재 한국의 현대 무용계가 형성된 배경이 되는 간략한 춤의 역사와 전통 한국 춤의 사상, 그리고 현대화 과정을 함께 다루고 있어 최근 활발하게 창작 활동을 하고 있는 무용가와 작품에 좀 더 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 안내한다.

이 책은 총 세 개의 단원으로 구성되어 있다. 첫째 단원에서는 한국 춤의 사상적 배경을 살펴보고, 둘째 단원에서는 지금까지 한국 춤이 어떻게 형성되고 발전되어 왔는지 그 역사와 현대화 과정을 조명해본다. 마지막으로 셋째 단원에서는 현재 활발하게 활동하고 있는 17명의 안무가와 현대 무용계를 이끌어가고 있는 10개의 대표 무용단을 소개하면서 춤에 대한 발현, 인식, 주요 작품을 다각도에서 다루고 있다. 또한 독자들이 춤의 세계에 동참할 수 있도록 디렉토리를 구성하여 앞으로 있을 공연과 무용 축제의 일정 및 내용을 확인할 수 있도록 했다.

2000년대에 접어든 한국무용계는 외국 유명 발레단과 현대 무용단에서 무용수로 활동하던 이들이 돌아와 국내에서 활동하기 시작하면서 이들 전문 안무가와 무용단들이 무용계의 주류가 되었다. 최근 활발히 활동하고 있는 17명의 안무가와 10개의 무용단을 소개한다.

Contemporary Korean Dancers and Dance Companies An Overview of Past and Present

Koreans have always enjoyed and appreciated dance. In the past, Korean dance was intimately rooted in people’s everyday lives, and the ideas that governed everyday life in turn greatly impacted the form and content of dance. However, with the turn of the modern era, Korea began to adopt Western culture, and dance was no exception. Korean dance moved from its traditional stage of outdoor gardens and courtyards to indoor heaters and changed to Western-style staged dances, which significantly distorted its nature and mode of existence.

Dancing Korea: New Waves of Choreographers and Dance Companies provides an overview of such history and current status of contemporary Korean dance along with major contemporary dancers and dance companies. In addition to introducing dancers who are still actively performing, the book explains the cultural milieu of dance in Korea, the philosophy of traditional Korean dance, and the history and modernization of dance in order to illuminate how Korean dance has come to be what it is today.

Based on personal interviews and experience in the dance scene, the author concentrates on the catalysts that led to explorations and places each of the artists in context. At the end of this book, directories to the artists’ contacts and dance festivals are included for readers to check performance schedule and further information.
