오는 5월 9일 수요일부터 13일까지 5일간 한국국제아트페어(KAF)의 특별전으로 “Something Mr. C Can’t Have” 가 열린다. 본 전시는 아트 페어 내에 마련되는 기획전으로 진화하는 비평적 미술 현장과 갤러리와의 간극 사이에서 기획 되었다. 전시의 제목에서 “Mr. C”는 콜렉터(collector)를 일컫는 것이며 “Something Mr. C Can’t Have”는 말 그대로 콜렉터가 아직 채 근접하지 못한 현대미술의 내밀한 언어들과 작가들, 그러한 무엇을 의미한다. 이제 KIAF라는 시장의 한 복판에는 우리가 놓쳐온 바로 ‘그들’의 자리가 마련된다. 이 전시에는 김범, 김성환, 김혜나, 노재운, 박주연, 박진아, 양혜규, 이주요, 임민욱, 조은지, 정서영, 정은영, 천영미, 황세준 등, 총 14명의 한국 작가들의 작품과 국내 비디오 작업 10여 점이 컴필레이션으로 만들어져 비디오 라운지 섹션에서 소개된다.

이번 전시에 등장하는 작가들은 현실에 관한 날카로운 비판적 인식과 반영, 그리고 섬세한 감수성을 바탕으로 한 미학적인 언어, 이 양자 사이를 진동한다. 또한 즉각적인 시각과 감각, 일시적 전략을 추구하기 보다는 보다 상위의 인식적 차원과 반성, 다원적인 세계관의 수용과 반영을 통해서 현대 미술의 의미와 가치를 풍부히 한다. 아마도 이들이 지닌 복합적이면서 단순치 않은 작업의 층위들 때문에 그 간 국내 갤러리와 대중들과 거리를 좁히기가 쉽지 않았을 것이나, 국내외적으로는 작가와 큐레이터, 비평가 등 보다 전문적인 미술인들에게서 회자되어 왔고 현대미술 내부의 요구와 총체적인 담론적 장 안에서는 매우 유효하고 또 주목할 만한 작업들로 평가를 받아왔다. 이들은 단순치 만은 않은 삶, 복잡한 현대 사회의 이면들을 섬세한 시선으로 살피면서 다양한 방식의 성찰을 작품 속에 내재화하고 있다. 이 전시는 폭넓은 경험과 인식, 섬세하고 다각적인 언어들을 선보이는 작가들을 만날 수 있는 자리이자, 나아가 진보적 현장으로서의 현대미술의 모습을 살펴보는 자리가 될 것이다.

Titled “Something Mr. C Can’t Have,” this special exhibition as part of KIAF2007 was initiated to narrow that very gap between galleries and the movement in the art scene. “Mr. C” refers to collectors, and “something” means what collectors or the public have not reached yet; in other words, the “something” would be the interesting singulary artists and certain languages of contemporary art, which thus far have been unnoticed in art markets. Now, a place for “them” is provided at the very center of KIAF, introducing the artworks of 14 Korean artists along with 10 local video artworks in compilation at the video lounge section.

Here, the singularities of the artists in this exhibition are librating between sharp-edged critical recognition on reality and refined and immanent aesthetic language based on their delicate sensitivity. Instead of pursuing instant senses and capricious trends, not only they concentrate on self-recognition and reflection but also they are aware of many problems of the realities and societies, ultimately enriching the insight and ethical value of contemporary art. In that sense, these artists correspond to what contemporary art requires and where the discourse of contemporary art evolves. They articulate the hidden side of life and contemporary society far from being naive, and these attempts are accumulated in their works. Artists today ceaselessly attempt to broaden the scope of their experience out of studios, so they achieve in-depth understanding about reality. Through their keen insight, we can find another intellectual resource for current society. Their struggles against the reality or antagonistic qualities result in their intrinsic or extrinsic visual languages of works. We hope this exhibition will provide an opportunity to reveal the artists who discover unique values under such circumstances and to enjoy the richness of their language and vision. Their presence is neither loud nor invisible. It is just deliberatively moving ahead of us.
