5.18 민주화 운동 과정에서 희생된 인물에 현대적인 이미지 표피를 덮는 수술을 한 후, 그 이미지에 다시 작가 본인의 피를 뿌리고 드레싱하는 행위를 보여주고 있다. 작가는 성형수술로 이미지를 복원하는 과정을 통해 ‘보기 싫은 과거’가 ‘보기 좋은 과거’로 날조되고 있음을 보여주고, 그것이 곧 우리 세대가 과거를 받아들이는 최선의 대응 방식임을 역설적으로 설명한다.

‘Gauze Dressing’ shows blood and dressing of a figure sacrificed during he May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, after plastic surgery of the figure by using a modern image. By recovering the image through plastic surgery, the artist demonstrates the fabrication of an ‘ugly past’ to a ‘beautiful past,’ paradoxically describing what might be the best way of embracing the past.
