철인삼종경기

“철인삼종 경기”는 달리기, 수영하기, 자전거 타기의 세 종목의 운동 경기를 도시의 곳곳과 도심의 공사장 흙더미 속에서 벌이는 작업이다. 그러나 작가의 철인삼종경기는 혼자만의 레이스로 특히나 달리기가 불가능한 혼잡로나 수영이 불가능한 흙더미에서 이루어지며, 그의 자전거는 헛바퀴만 돌아간다. 이러한 무목적적인 퍼포먼스를 통해 역설적으로 작가는 장소나 도시에 대한 과학적 시각 이면에 감추어지는, 현대 도시에서 사라져만 가는 ‘흙’이라는 그 근원적 요소와 바탕의 부재를 상기시키고 있다. 이 작품의 맥락 역시 작가의 전작인 “노는 땅에서 놀기” 의 연장선상에서 살펴볼 수 있다.

Triathlon

‘Triathlon’, which is composed of running, swimming and cycling is his work created everywhere in the city and on the earth dump at a construction site. However, the triathlon is a race of one participant, conducted on a jammed road where one cannot run and on an earth dump where one cannot swim. His bicycle just spins its wheels. Through this aimless performance, he recollects the absence of the fundamental factor represented by ‘earth’ and ground, which has been disappearing in the modern city. The context of this work can be shown in the same line of “Playing on the Vacant Lot.”
