양혜규는 장소로부터 새로이 형성되는 개인의 정체성에 대한, 그리고 이방인으로서 타자화되는 자신의 실제 삶으로부터 한편의 훌륭한 비디오 작업을 선보인다. 작가는 이전의 2년 동안 몇 개의 각기 다른 나라의 레지던시 프로그램을 통해 매번 새로운 장소에 거주하고 그곳에 자신의 자리를 만들어 나가야 하는 경험을 해왔다. 이 작업은 각기 다른 도시에서 촬영된 추상적인 이미지, 빛, 어떤 장소들의 디테일 등을 한편의 네러티브와 병치시키면서 작가만의 섬세한 수사학적 영상 언어로 오늘날 유랑적 삶 속에서 새로이 재고되어야 할 영역의 문제, 타자의 자리에 대해 이야기 한다.

Unfolding Places

Yang Haegue has moved from place to place in many different cities positioning herself as ‘the other’ with certain tension and conflict. “Unfolding Space” has developed out of her observation, recognition and experience in Seoul and London over the last two years. Her epistemological poetry overlaps and is juxtaposed with moving images including lights, details of places, movements of things, the presence of buildings and talk about the territorial tension between ‘perception’ and ‘being perceived’. It is an incredibly beautiful and poetic video, derived from the life of artist on the move.
