비처럼 내리는 수많은 공들은 마치 종교적인 메시지를 담고 있는 듯 하기도 하지만 유머스런 장난의 느낌도 있다. 어떤 순간적인 긴장과 편집증, 긴장해소 이후 공허한 상태 등 기본적으로 내 안에 있는 습관과도 같은 아주 작은 공포의 모양들을 총체적인 느낌의 이름으로 광장공포/고소공포/고공공포와 같은 제목으로 설정하였다. 여기에는 빠르게 다가오는 밀도 높은 물체, 높은 곳에서 내려다본 감정, 주기적인 운동을 하는 성질 등이 포함된다. 특정 상황에 대해 규정된 시스템의 비적합성을 가시화 하고자 하는 일련의 나의 다른 작업과 같은 선상에서 개인사적인 특별함을 혼합할 수 있었던 작업이라고 할 수 있겠다.

25 Acrophobia

Acrophobia means a psychological fear of height or high places. With this word, I would like to represent small fears which I have in mind habitually. In this sense, ball is symbolic metaphor of my inner fear. Alongside with this, I would like to include feelings, which we have when something comes close with speed, look down from the high places, or see the periodical movement, in this work. At first look, balls, which fall down like rain, seem to have the religious message, but they also look like humorous plays in the other way. This kind of play with the scale in this work is also very compatible with my other works that I would like to visualize the none-appropriateness of system which is defined with situation.”

아파트만들기

상하이의 어느 고층아파트 단지, 이곳 대부분의 아파트들은 최상층이 34층이며 부분부분 12층 정도의 상대적으로 저층구조인 아파트들이 끼어있다. 확실치는 않지만 이러한 차이는 아마도 아파트들간의 조망권 혹은 일조권 때문에 생겨난 것이다. 이는 한 개인이 기존의 기준과 시스템에 개입하여 이를 전복시키려 할 때, 이용하기에 적절한 공간으로 인식됐다. 이 때에는 상당히 유희적인 관점이 작동한다. 그 빈 공간에 새로운 층을 쌓아 올리는 행위는 그 아파트를 포함해 주변 공간을 이루고 있는 꽤 많은 과학적이거나 사회적인 (요소)근거들을 무력화시킨다. 혹은 다소 황당하고 지극히 개인적인 표현 방법으로 내제된 기본원리를 표면화 한다고도 할 수 있겠다.

Making an Apartment

The high-rise apartment complex in Shanghai comprises mostly of 34-storey flats along with relatively lower apartments, 12 stories, put up between high-rises in some of the areas. Although it cannot be said for certain, such arrangement which probably resulted out of the need to safeguard the light and view of apartment dwellers, is seen as a product of individuals, with their exposure to societal norms and standards that so much influences their daily decisions, arriving at the most logical conclusion when overturning and uncovering established conventions and systems. Yet a fairly playful point of view is also at work. And hence, the act of adding new floors on an empty space can, at once, be described as manifestation of intrinsic and innermost principles in the most outrageous and personal way, negating, in the process, any scientific or social elements(foundations) that constitute the complex and its surrounding areas.

자전거

초자연적인 현상을 포착한 듯 보이는 “자전거”는 사실 작가의 교묘한 화면 편집으로 만들어진 것이다. 언뜻 보기에 정지된 듯 보이던 영상은 자전거의 뒷바퀴가 서서히 움직이면서 관객들의 호기심을 자극한다. 이 바퀴는 외부의 물리적인 개입 없이 계속 돌아가며 서기를 반복한다.

Bicycle

In “Bicycle”, this supernatural phenomenon is the result of the artist’s clever editing. It seems to be still at the first glance but the back wheel slowly begins to rotate, arousing a curiosity. The wheel continuously rotates and stops without the involvement of the outside force.
