CODY’S LEGEND VS. FREUD’S SHIT BOX, 1993-94
"The most shocking of all the cultural clashes I witnessed as an immigrant to the United States was one concerning physical differences. America’s constructs of masculinity and its macho perspectives, which often belittle Asian men as submissive, feminine and unpleasant subjects, left lasting scars. Cody’s Legend vs. Freud’s Shit Box set out to challenge Michelangelo’s David, one of the most potent symbols of masculine beauty in Western art. I wanted to question how Freudian theories establish gender identities and standards in the West and counter Western views of Asian men by presenting the bare physique of a male Asian artist."
